Timber and engineered wood subfloors move. They expand, contract and deflect under load — and a rigid drain body fixed directly to them will either crack the tile above or break the waterproofing seal below.
Getting a shower drain right on a timber floor is about isolation, sealing and outlet routing.
The Three Critical Requirements
1. Structural rigidity at the drain
The drain must sit on a solid, non-moving base — normally a plywood packer or a steel/timber noggin frame fixed between joists. Never rely on the flooring board alone.
2. A sealing flange, always
Timber is far less forgiving of minor water ingress than concrete. Specify a drain with an integrated flange that the liquid waterproofing membrane can bond to directly.
3. Outlet routing through joists
Horizontal outlets usually need to run between joists. Check joist direction, spacing and depth before ordering — a drain that fits the floor may not fit the structure underneath.

Installation Notes
- Fix a solid packer/frame to the joists before setting the drain body — do not screw the drain directly to floorboards.
- Apply the waterproofing membrane continuously from the wall, over the flange, and around the drain body.
- Allow a movement joint between the tile field and the drain frame where the span is large.
- Confirm the subfloor is dry and within moisture tolerance before tiling.
