The choice between a linear drain and a point drain is usually presented as a design preference. In practice it is decided by three physical constraints — floor build-up, tile format and the required floor fall — and the design preference only comes in after those are satisfied.
The fundamental difference
A point drain collects water at one location and requires the floor to fall toward it from four directions. A linear drain collects water along a line and requires the floor to fall in one direction only.
That single difference drives everything else: screed complexity, tile cutting, achievable slope, and whether the bathroom can be level-access.
Constraint 1: Floor build-up
This usually decides the question before anything else.

A shallow point drain can sometimes fit where a linear channel cannot. This is the one scenario where a point drain is chosen on physical grounds rather than layout grounds.
Constraint 2: Tile format
This is where linear drains win decisively, and it is the reason they dominate high-end and large-format work.
- Large-format tile: a point drain requires the tile to be cut to four planes falling in different directions. The cuts are complex, the joints are difficult to keep aligned, and any error is highly visible across a large tile.
- Natural stone: stone is expensive and cannot be re-cut indefinitely. A single-plane fall lets the stone run to a straight line with one cut.
- Small ceramic tile: the advantage largely disappears. Small tiles handle four-way falls more forgivingly, and the drain position matters less visually.
Constraint 3: Required fall and level access
The slope required depends on how far water has to travel.
- Point drain: water travels diagonally from the corners to the centre. The total fall is greater, and the floor has to be built up at the perimeter.
- Linear drain: water travels in one direction only. The fall can be shallower, and the floor is higher at one edge rather than around the whole perimeter.
For a level-access or wheelchair-accessible bathroom, this is decisive. A linear drain at the wall allows a shallow single-plane fall; a centre point drain requires steeper falls that reduce usability.

The cost comparison, honestly
A linear drain costs more as a product. It often costs less in labour:
- Less screed work — one plane instead of four
- Less tile cutting — particularly with large-format tile
- Fewer setting-out errors — one direction to get right instead of four meeting at a point
- Lower tiling skill requirement — no mitred cuts meeting at a drain
On large-format tile the labour saving frequently offsets the product cost difference. On small ceramic tile in a compact bathroom, it usually does not.
Point drains are not obsolete
It is worth saying clearly: a well-installed point drain in a small bathroom with small tile is a perfectly good solution. The failures attributed to point drains are usually failures of four-way fall execution, not of the product type.
Where a point drain is used, the discipline needed is in the screed: four planes meeting cleanly at the drain, with adequate fall from every corner.
Making the decision
- Measure the build-up. If it is under 60 mm, that constrains the options immediately.
- Look at the tile format. Large tile or stone points strongly to linear.
- Check whether level access is required. If it is, linear at the wall is almost always the answer.
- Confirm the outlet route and joist or slab conditions.
- Only then consider appearance — grate finish and whether the drain should be visible.
