Bathroom shower drains are most commonly made from stainless steel — grades 201, 304 and 316 depending on cost target and environment — with brass used for selected fittings and finishes. External trench drains use polymer concrete, HDPE or heavier stainless steel.
Stainless steel: the default

Brass
Brass is used for selected basin, bath and trap fittings, where it is often chosen to match brass or bronze tapware. It can be supplied as a custom option on specific models.
Why stainless steel dominates
- Corrosion resistance — it is a wet, constantly humid environment
- Strength at low section — the channel body and grate must be slim but rigid
- Cleanability — non-porous surface, does not harbour bacteria
- Finish options — brushed and electroplated surfaces

What affects the choice
- Environment — coastal or chlorinated spaces need a higher grade
- Market requirements — some countries set minimum standards for building products; confirm the applicable requirement for your destination
- Floor finish — stone and large-format tile usually need a tile-insert frame
- Load — commercial and vehicular traffic drives heavier construction
- Budget — grade selection is the main cost lever
