A stainless steel drain body should last the life of the bathroom. The parts that fail first are the ones with moving or wearing elements — traps, seals and grates — and failures are more often installation-related than product-related.

The real failure modes
In practice, drains rarely fail because of the material. They fail because of:
- Waterproofing detail — membrane not bonded continuously over the flange
- Movement — drain body not rigidly supported, particularly on timber
- Corrosion in the wrong environment — grade 304 specified for a coastal or chlorinated location
- Blockage — trap never cleaned, leading to overflow and water damage
- Mechanical damage — grate damaged on site and not replaced
- Chemical attack — routine use of aggressive drain cleaners on seals and finishes
What extends service life
- Correct grade for the environment — 316 in coastal and chlorinated locations
- Rigid support, correctly installed
- Regular light cleaning rather than occasional heavy cleaning
- Non-abrasive, non-aggressive cleaning products
- Correct load class where wheeled traffic passes over the grate
- Spare grates held for projects so damaged ones are replaced with a matching part
Practical implication for specifiers
The installed cost of a drain is dominated by labour and tiling, not the product. Trading a small amount of product cost for a better flange detail and a wider adjustment range is almost always the correct decision over the life of the building.
