Wet area and commercial floor drains

Floor Drains for Wet Areas

Wet area and commercial floor drains

Floor drains handle water outside the shower zone — bathrooms, laundries, plant rooms, balconies and commercial wet areas. Specification depends on the load the grate must carry, how often the area is washed down, and how much debris is expected.

Where Floor Drains Are Used

  • Bathrooms and wet rooms, in addition to or instead of a shower drain
  • Laundries and utility rooms
  • Plant rooms, mechanical and service areas
  • Commercial kitchens and back-of-house areas
  • Balconies and covered external areas

What Determines the Specification

Load — will the area take foot traffic only, trolley traffic, or vehicles? Load class drives the grate and body specification.

Flow — how much water arrives, and how fast. Wash-down areas and plant rooms can deliver far more water than a bathroom floor.

Debris — commercial kitchens and laundries generate solids that need a basket or larger grate openings; bathrooms mainly generate hair.

Odour control — areas used intermittently need a trap that does not rely on a water seal that will evaporate.
