Domestic showers: clear the grate every one to two weeks, weekly in households with long hair. Commercial and hotel showers: daily. Infrequently used bathrooms: flush the trap monthly to prevent the water seal drying out.
Recommended frequency
| Setting | Grate | Hair trap | Odour seal |
|---|---|---|---|
| Domestic, daily use | Every 1–2 weeks | Monthly | Naturally maintained by use |
| Domestic, long hair in household | Weekly | Every 2–4 weeks | Naturally maintained |
| Hotel guest bathroom | Daily | Daily check | Continuous use |
| Care home / communal | Daily, sometimes more | Daily | Continuous use |
| Guest or spare bathroom | Monthly | Quarterly | Flush monthly — seal can evaporate |
| Holiday property | On each visit | On each visit | Flush on each visit |
What each clean involves
Grate clean (1–2 min) — lift the grate, clear hair from the underside and the channel entrance, replace.
Trap clean (5–10 min) — lift the grate, remove the hair trap, empty and rinse it, check the trap is clear, replace.
Deep clean (20–30 min) — clear the full channel length, clean the channel walls, check the odour seal, flush with hot water, inspect the outlet.
Why frequency matters more than method
A drain cleaned regularly never blocks. A drain cleaned rarely blocks repeatedly, and by the time it blocks the debris has usually reached the trap and sometimes the pipe. Frequency of light cleaning is more effective than occasional heavy cleaning.
Operational note for hotels
Build trap checking into the standard room cleaning routine rather than treating it as a maintenance task. Guests report slow drainage as a fault, and a drain that can be cleared in under a minute during cleaning never becomes a maintenance call.
