
Natural stone changes how a shower drain has to be specified. Marble, travertine, granite and limestone are thicker than ceramic tile, heavier, and far less tolerant of a visible mismatch at the drain.
What Changes With Natural Stone
1. Tile thickness drives frame height
Stone is often cut 15–30 mm thick against 8–10 mm ceramic. The drain frame must accept that thickness, or the grate will sit proud of the floor.
2. Weight of the grate
A stone-filled grate is heavy. The drain body must support it without deflection, and the grate must be removable for cleaning without damage.
3. Matching the stone
Stone is rarely a uniform colour. A tile-insert grate cut from the same slab is the only way to achieve a truly invisible finish — with steel, the contrast is always visible.
4. Cutting accuracy
Stone inserts need precise cutting and edge finishing. Allow for a cutting tolerance in the frame design, not the stone.

Installation Notes
- Confirm the frame height range before the stone is cut — stone cannot be re-cut indefinitely.
- Seal stone edges around the drain; unsealed cut faces absorb water and stain.
- Use a protective film on polished stone at the drain during installation.
- Check that the grate fixing allows removal without levering against the stone edge.
