Work through five constraints in order: available floor build-up, existing pipe position, shower size and flow, floor finish, and whether the drain should be visible. The first two usually eliminate most options immediately.
Step 1: Measure the floor build-up
Measure from the structural slab to the finished tile surface, at the drain position. This is the hard constraint that decides whether a linear drain will fit at all.

Step 2: Confirm the pipe position
Horizontal, vertical or side outlet — and where the pipe actually runs. A drain that fits the floor may not fit the structure underneath, particularly through timber joists.

Step 4: Match the floor finish

Step 5: Decide on visibility
If the drain should disappear, use a tile-insert and set it against the wall. If it can read as a design line, choose the finish to match the tapware — brushed steel, polished, or matte black.
