A linear shower drain is a long, narrow drainage channel installed in a line across or along the shower floor, rather than a single point. Water falls in one direction — toward the channel — instead of sloping to four corners around a centre drain.
How it works
A linear drain consists of a channel body set into the floor, a removable grate or tile-insert on top, and an outlet at one end connecting to the waste pipe. Because the channel captures water along its whole length, the floor only needs to fall in a single plane.
Why it is used
- Single-plane fall — simpler screed work and a shallower slope than a four-way fall around a point drain.
- Larger usable floor — no drain in the middle of the shower to stand on.
- Design continuity — with a tile-insert grate, the drain can be almost invisible.
- Barrier-free bathrooms — a shallow single slope suits level-access showers and wheelchair use.
Common lengths
Standard linear drains run from around 600 mm up to 1200 mm, with custom lengths available where the drain needs to run the full width of the shower opening.
